Bearcats blast Trojans in 77-10 road win

The Aledo Bearcats’ march through District 5-5A, D-II continued Friday night on the road versus the Waco University Trojans, as the former blasted the latter for 592 yards of offense and a 77-10 final score. Aledo (7-1, 6-0) scored touchdowns on all seven of its first-half drives, thanks in large part to the efforts of junior running back JoJo Earle, who scorched University’s defense for six total touchdowns (three on the ground, three through the air) and a combined 215 yards of offense. Coupled with another shutdown performance by the Bearcats’ defense which netted the visiting team seven tackles for a loss, a pair of sacks (junior defensive tackle Oliver Crow and senior defensive end Logan Thurman), an interception (senior Cade Jones) and a fumble recovery (junior safety Sam Forman), Aledo outscored its opponent, 21-3 in the first quarter and 28-0 in the second frame for a 49-3 halftime lead. The Bearcats repeated with a similar performance in the second half, outscoring the Trojans, 28-7 over the game’s final two quarters. While Aledo’s offense, a unit which has scored less than 40 points in only one game this season, continued to roll versus University, the former’s defense put up one of its best performances of the year, allowing the second fewest point total all season. In all, 27 different Bearcats recorded at least one tackle versus the Trojans, something which proved essential versus a capable University ground game which still netted 153 yards, Aledo Head Coach Tim Buchanan said. “When you play a running back like University had, you better have a group effort,” Buchanan said. “Because that guy was a heckuva ballcarrier. He’s one of the best I’ve seen this year, and I think that had a lot to do with more than one guy getting their name on the tackle chart. “After the first series, we did a pretty good job of kids running to the football and having multiple players there at the point of contact whenever we needed them.” Aledo has maintained its undefeated status in District 5-5A, D-II despite the team enjoying its bye five weeks ago. As a result, the Bearcats have continued to extend their ongoing state record of consecutive district wins (now at 89). Buchanan said Aledo’s players have done well maintaining a strong desire to improve week in and week out, something which has helped the team find success during its five-game march following its bye. “Our kids are playing really well right now and are trying to get better each week,” Buchanan said. Aledo senior quarterback Jake Bishop finished 15-of-18 for 319 yards and four TDs, with Earle (seven receptions for 157 yards) proving the signal caller’s favorite target. Sophomore tailback Garrett Key paced the Bearcats’ backfield with 120 yards and three scores on 20 carries.
